Reading Notes: Mahabharata, part A
Devavrata's Vow
By Donald A. Mackenzie
- Devarata's noble character is depicted through his commitment to his father
- I'm shocked that he is willing to renounce his claim to the throne for a girl his father thought was pretty...seems a little rash
- The name which the gods bestow on Devarata is that of Bhishma which is a title he may wear as a reminder of the terrible oath he took for a noble reason
- Devarata and his relationship with the now heirs to the throne, Chitrangada and Vichitravirya would make great subject matter for a story this week
- Devarata gave up the throne for his father and now he just has to take care of the family that essentially stole his royal claim?
- Im not shocked that the random child they gave the throne to did a bad job, at least by the second boy Bhishma realized he had to intervene in the royal proceedings
Bhishma in his later years looking quite heroic
