Introduction to a Performer!
Hello everyone! My name is George Soter and I was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. I am currently a junior vocal performance major here at OU which essentially means I spend my days screaming in foreign languages and fighting with other music majors for open practice rooms. If any of you attend the university theater regularly, you may have seen me in last semesters production of Bluebeard's Castle and L'enfant et les Sortilèges, although if you did, its doubtful you would have recognized me under the wig, 10 pounds of makeup, and body suit!

Although bringing a production together can be intense, time consuming, and even exhausting, its all worth it for the thrill of being under the stage lights, bearing your soul with others who share your passion. I've known that I was going to pursue a career in the arts since I was in the third grade and joined a children's fine arts academy, it was there that I was cast in my first musical and I've consistently continued to perform ever since. My love for classical music may be immense now but when I started my college career, I was certain that my future was in music theater. While I did choose to audition for the voice department here at OU, I was certain that after establishing a foundation of good technique in the Chiaroscuro style, I would then transition back into the realm of musical theater. However, as my voice teacher and mentor Dr. Burcham says, "George caught the opera bug!" As ridiculous as that sounds, it's really quite true. Now my dream is to travel the world, experience other cultures, grow as a musician, and perform the works of the greats for as long as I'm able.
Other things to note about me: I love true crime shows, documentaries, and podcasts. I've always had a deep interest in psychology and there's something about the mind of a sociopath that never ceases to spike my curiosity. My most recently binged shows are "You" and "Homecoming" and I would highly recommend both to anyone! If you have ever seen "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" then you have a pretty accurate representation of my family. My grandparents both grew up in Greece and they most certainly passed on their culture to their children and grandchildren. I have one younger brother who is attending OU this coming fall, two wonderful and supportive parents, and a fierce and fiery grandmother who even at 90 still has a joyous and youthful spirit.
That's just about all there is to say about me, thanks for reading!
Oh my gosh, George, look at that: you and Hunter both in this class, now as your real selves, not as Teapot and Teacup, ha ha. Like I said on Hunter's Introduction, you have to let me know if there is anything you are performing in, or any performance you want to recommend, so that I can be sure to include that in the class announcements. The most fun announcements are the ones about actual students in the class! And I am pleased to say that when you transform yourself into a new character in writing, you don't have to put on 10 pounds of make-up... and with the Internet as your writing space, you don't have to fight for open practice rooms: there is space for everyone online! And then some! :-)
ReplyDeletePlus I learned something new here: for me, chiaroscuro is a term I know from painting; the idea of applying that to singing voices is very intriguing. Maybe you can find a way to develop a chiaroscuro writing style...? What do you think? I think it sounds like a fun challenge. You can experiment with your stories this semester and just see what happens!
Hey George! I am also born and raised in Edmond! I grew up on Covell and Kelley and went to Edmond North. What high school did you go to? I haven't been to any productions at OU yet, but I need to attend some for one of my classes this semester. Are you performing in any of them this semester? If so let me know and I'll see if yours is one I can go to!
ReplyDeleteHey George,
ReplyDeleteI think your life, based off your Intro, sounds really cool! I am a terrible singer and I am really bad at learning languages but I really glad some people are good at both! I also cant relate to loving being in the spot light on a stage but I do love the feeling of being in a lab and getting some really cool results, I can imagine it’s a great feeling!
