Reading Notes: Ramayana Part A

Dasharatha's Sons by Donald A. Mackenzie

  •  Ashwamedha or "horse sacrifice'' was a rite that could only be performed by a king, it took a year to prepare due to the requirement that the horse roam free before it could be used in the ritual. According to Hindu mythology, the Gods would honor this commitment with the birth of a child.
  • Homa rituals are burnt offerings originally from the Vedic religion, however the practice soon spread to Buddhism and throughout religious practice throughout Asia.
  • The two wives having to sit by the dead flaming horse all night long reminds me of the scene from game of thrones where a similar sacrifice is used to awaken dragons.

Rama: Avatar of Vishnu by Donald A. Mackenzie

  • interesting to note that Ravana can only be defeated as by man or monkey. Vishnu is born on earth as a human: Rama, son of Dasharatha, but what if he came to earth as a monkey instead?
  • Ravana shares many key elements with Lucifer: powerful disciple full of knowledge who yearned for more power. Ten heads of knowledge parallel to the forbidden fruit.
  • Vishnu the Preserver again parallels to christian doctrine: a benevolent and shapeless deity takes pity on the oppressed and is born as man in order to defeat the hold that the Demon king and his slave death have over the earth.
